Small Fish Big Ocean

Helping small tour operators and niche agents with travel ecommerce

Here is an idea that you can use on your website if you have itineraries that you want to present:

Map has a route plus animated photos showing off different highlights.
Looks nice and a step up from a normal, static, map.

See this example in use on TourDust

There are a number of ways to do it, EveryTrail have built apps for android, blackberry and iphone, which do it all for you using the GPS tracker on the phone and the cameras in built phone.  You just need to follow the final step below to grab the embed code.  However I did it using a seperate digi camera (better quality pics) and this is more accessible for people who don't have a smart phone or who don't want to damage their smartphone in the great outdoors!

Equipment needed
Digital Camera + GPS.  I used GPS tracking on my android phone, using the Google mytracks application.  But could just as easily use a regular GPS unit.

Before you start
Synch the clocks on your GPS and digital camera  (If you forget don't worry, everytrail can make adjustments based on the clock differences).

Step 1. Switch on your GPS tracker at the beginning of the tour and leave on throughout the length of the tour.  (Could be battery issues if you don't have access to a charger)
Step 2. Take photos with a digital camera

Back home
Step 1: Upload your GPS tracks to everytrail (mine were in GPX file format)
Step 2. Upload your photos to everytrail.  You can add them direct from your computer, or from Flickr or picasa (I did it from Picasa and it worked a treat)
Step 3: Edit locations and descriptions of images.  There is an option to Auto place the photos, which places the photos according to the time recorded by the digital camera and where the GPS file had you placed at the time.  It didn't work seamlessly the first time, but I think they have ironed out most of the bugs now.
Step 4: You are done.  Grab the Embed code that is displayed on the final trip page and copy it into your blog or webpage.  You can adjust the display size by bastardising the embed code where it says object width="400" height="300" just change those to the sizes you want to display in.  For instance our blog page text width is around 620 pixels, so I changed it to object width="620" height="300"

Cost = £0, assuming you have the equipment to start with.
It is really quite easy, probably take you a couple of hours assuming everything works first time.

Big thank you to Ben (from TourDust) for supplying this write up
